What's this site about?

You'll find in this site, rare and very useful dictionaries that have fallen in the public domain. There are many important dictionaries out there that have not (unfortunately) been converted to machine readable formats. Those that have, are not accessible to common users. To me, what's important is to convert those dictionaries to various computer/hand-held formats available for the public.

For instance, the Lane Lexicon has been made available as a machine readable format by the Perseus project and further enhanced by the Alpheios project. There exist (to my knowledge) two android versions on the PlayStore:

  1. Lane's Arabic Lexicon
  2. Muggy's DictBrowser.

While the former is a paid app that does not even have an ad-version, the latter is available as a paid and and ad app. Unfortunately there is no computer version for look-ups with free open-source softwares (except for the web versions -- perseus, alpheios)

Dictionary Formats

On this site, you will be able to download versions of these dictionaries in open-formats. I intend to provide for the time being, God Willing, the following formats:

  1. Aard2 Slob (*.slob)
  2. MDict (*.mdx | *.mdd)
  3. Dictd (*.dict.dz)
  4. XDXF (*.xdxf)
  5. DSL (*.dsl)
  6. Babylon (*.bgl)
  7. DictionaryForMIDs (*.jar)
  8. Comma-Separated-Value (*.csv)
  9. StarDict (*.ifo | *.idx | *.dict.dz)

Note that for the first 6 first formats, namely from StarDict to Babylon, they are all supported by the GoldenDict PC version. As for the Android version i am not sure. Anyway, there are plenty of free and open-source dictionary look-up applications that support there formats. As I see fit, more formats will be added, God Willing.

About the Dictionary files

The following dictionaries shall be available when the "digging" will finish:

Arabic-English:

  1. Edward Willam Lane: An Arabic-English Lexicon
  2. H. Anthony Salmoné: An Advanced Learner's Arabic-English Dictionary

Latin-English:

  1. Lewis: A Short Latin-English Lexicon

Greek-English:

  1. Henry George Liddell: An Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon
  2. G. ABBOTT-SMITH: A MANUAL GREEK LEXICON OF THE NEW TESTAMENT
  3. Robert Scott: A Greek-English Lexicon

French-French:

  1. Le Dictionnaire de l'Académie Française de 1935 (8ème Edition)
  2. Le Dictionnnaire de la Langue Française d'Emile Littré

Note that the last two French dictionaries are already available in StarDict format. I will only provide some further enhencements and convert them to the other formats.

A propos de ce site

Vous trouverez sur ce site quelques rares dictionnaires tombés dans le domaine public. En effet il y a beaucoup de dictionnaires très importants, de ce genre, qui ne sont pas réellement accéssibles au grand public car ils n'ont pas été convertis dans le format "machine-readable". Ceux qui l'ont été sont pour la plupart inaccéssibles aux utilisateurs simples. Je pense que ce qui est important c'est de convertir ces dictionnaires à différents formats pris en charge par les ordinateurs et smart-phones.

Par exemple, le Lane-Lexicon a été rendu dans le format "machine-readable" par le projet Perseus et ce format a été amérioré par le projet Alpheios. Il existe à ce jour (en ma connaissance) deux versions pour Android sur le PlayStore:

  1. Lane's Arabic Lexicon
  2. Muggy's DictBrowser.

Tandis que le premier est une paid-app qui n'a même pas de version "publicitaire", le second est disponible en tant que paid-app et ad-app. Malheureusement il n'y a pas de version pour les logiciels de consulation de dictionnaires (excepté en ligne à travers Perseus et Alpheios)

Différents Formats

Sur ce site, vous trouverez des téléchargements pour les dictionnaires ci-dessous, à des formats librement utilisables sur les logiciels de consultations de votre choix:

Notez que pour les 6 premiers formats, c'est-à-dire de StarDict à Babylon, ils sont tous pris en charge par GoldenDict PC. Pour la version Android, je n'en suis pas sûr. De toutes façons, il y a assez de logiciels de consultation de dictionnaires open-sources et libres pour supporter tous ces formats. Au fil du temps, si néssécité oblige, j'ajouterais d'autres formats, si Dieu le veut.
